French President Jacques Chirac with senior members of the French industry during his visit to inaugurate the 1999 show yesterday.
The President watched the flying display, including the magnificent flypast by eight Airbus aircraft and leading French aircraft.
He also toured exhibits found in the halls of major French companies.
His visit will no doubt have given him food for thought as the French and European industry goes through the protracted process of restructuring.
n French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin will make a speech at the show on Saturday.
