Qantas Airways is facing legal action brought against it by maintenance workers whose duties were transferred to Melbourne when the carrier outsourced the work to a labour hire company there.

Qantas is yet to comment on the case, which is said to be the first Federal Court appeal brought against an employer in the airline industry in Australia.

Lawyers representing approximately 150 workers say the Sydney-based employees are filing the suit because Qantas outsourced the heavy maintenance work they previously carried out to a labour hire firm on inferior terms and conditions.
