Qinetiq is developing a spin-off from a radar system used for foreign-object detection (FOD) on runways to target intruders around an airport's perimeter.
The UK technology organisation's Tarsier 2200 will be a "cutdown" version of its Tarsier 1100 FOD high-performance radar, for which Qinetiq is talking to potential commercial partners and airport customers.
The 2200 version - which could be ready to demonstrate by the second quarter of next year - can detect a person crawling up to 4km (2.5 miles) away. It would benefit airports surrounded by open areas, says Michael Burns, Qinetiq director aviation markets.Qinetiq displayed a scale model of the 2200 at the Avsec security exhibition and conference in Athens last month.
