USKITPLANE manufacturer Rans has launched its first foray into the market for high-performance amateur-built aircraft. The S-16 Shekari is a side-by-side two-seater from a company better known for producing aircraft more suited for "low-and-slow" flying.

The 60kW (80hp) Rotax 912 is producing speeds of 135kt (225km/h), says Randy Schlitter, president of Hays, Kansas-based Rans. "We think it will be ideal with the Teledyne Continental IO-240 and we project a cruise speed upwards of 150kt," he says.
