Daniel Burnham is leaving his post as vice-chairman of AlliedSignal to succeed Dennis Picard as chairman and chief executive of Raytheon.

Burnham will initially become president and chief operating officer on 1 July. He will move to head the US defence giant on 1 December when Picard retires. Burnham was president of AlliedSignal's aerospace unit from 1992-7 and became the company's vice- chairman last October.

AlliedSignal, meanwhile, has named Frederic Poses, another vice-chairman, president and chief operating officer. He was president of the engineered materials unit.
