Streaming video and location information will be transmitted to spectators from the 1,500lb-thrust (6.7kN) re-ignitable liquid oxygen/kerosene rocket-powered Mk1 X-Racer which will compete in the Rocket Racing League starting in 2006.
The Wi-Fi standard streaming video will show the racing from multiple angles, including cockpit, side-angle and wing-to-wing views.
Onboard global positioning system (GPS) units will send the racers’ positions within the 3.2km (2 miles) long, 1.6km wide and 5,000ft (1,520m) high race course, to handheld units.
“These systems will play a critical role in helping our fans follow their heroes into the sky,” says Rocket Racing League co-founder Peter Diamondis. He is obtaining the technology from Canadian company GPS Industries, which has provided GPS services to other sports, including golf.
