Bulgaria's defence ministry is heading a NATO effort to reduce the vulnerability of helicopters to attack by rocket-propelled grenades (RPG) fired from man-portable anti-tank weapons. The programme is focused on protecting against attack by adding armoured plates to a helicopter to withstand the impact of an RPG. The work is being conducted by the Sofia-based Metal Science Institute.
