Rockwell Collins Flight Dynamics is to unveil a surface guidance system (SGS) that will be developed with Jeppesen Sanderson and Smiths Industries Aerospace to improve situational awareness and reduce the risk of runway incursions. The system will be revealed at the Farnborough air show this month.

The Flight Dynamics-developed SGS is a basic development of the Portland, Oregon-based company's head-up guidance (HGS) system which provides command guidance for low visibility take-off, landing and roll-out. The SGS extends these capabilties by integrating the HGS with other Collins systems such as flightdeck displays, multimode receivers and automatic dependent surveillance systems.

In a demonstration planned with Jeppesen and Smiths, the SGS will be integrated with the flight management system and navigation database of a testbed aircraft to display ground guidance, taxiways, runways and terminal buildings.

Flight Dynamics says SGS is "planned to be a future capability of the new generation HGS 4000 head-up guidance system".
