Rolls-Royce has launched an initiative to inspire pupils to study science at school, to try to combat a decline in applications for university science and engineering courses.

The Rolls-Royce Science Prize is being marketed to 35,000 schools and colleges in the UK and Republic of Ireland and submissions are being accepted until February 2005.

Teachers will submit proposals for their institutions, from which shortlisted submissions will receive financial assistance from Rolls-Royce to implement. The eventual winner will be given £15,000 ($27,000) to invest in science education.

The programme is being supported by UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, Secretary of State for Education and Skills Charles Clarke, former Tomorrow's World presenter Philippa Forrester and more than 25 education- and science-related professional organisations.
