Los Angeles International (LAX) airport will have seven airlines flying the Airbus A380 on international flights from December, a fact that it credits to its new international terminal.
Air France, British Airways, China Southern Airlines, Korean Air, Qantas Airways and Singapore Airlines operate at least seven daily flights on the super jumbo to the airport, with Emirates planning to upgauage its existing service to an A380 from 2 December.
Operator Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) says that this service is “absolutely” attributable to the new Tom Bradley International terminal. Phase one of the expanded and rehabilitated terminal opened on 18 September.
The new terminal has nine gates designed for group six aircraft, which includes the A380 as well as the Boeing 747-8 and the largest Boeing 777s. A380 flights previously had to board and deplane remotely.
LAX also boasts the most A380 flights of any US airport, with New York’s John F. Kennedy International the next busiest with flights on only four carriers.
