Paris 2001 saw the signing of a long-awaited $5 million contract between China's national aeronautical industry and the Russian Fazotron-NIIR radar design house. It covers supply of the new Zhuk air-to-air radar for installation in Chinese fighters.

According to Anatoliy Kanashchenkov, general director of Fazotron-NIIR, the contract signed at Le Bourget provides for the delivery of 100 Zhuks for installation in Shenyang J-8s operated by the Chinese People¹s Liberation Army Air Force.

It has long been expected that the so far unsold F-8IIM export version of J-8 would be equipped with Zhuk. Negotiations on licence manufacture of the new radar in China are reported to be under way.
