Sabre’s global distribution system will introduce a fee-based, opt-in plan for travel management firms that cuts incentive payments in return for access to all airfares without airline service charges. “The Efficient Access Program” will save the travel industry billions of dollars, says Chris Kroeger, Sabre Travel Network senior vice-president, North America. The scheme, effective in August, represents a major shift in GDS economics, say analysts, though other major players have not followed suit or in the case of Cendant’s Galileo, criticised the opt-in plan as “cost-shifting”.
