EXPRESS ONE International, the Dallas, Texas-based cargo and charter carrier, has grounded its 39-aircraft fleet voluntarily after a US Federal Aviation Administration audit discovered serious safety concerns.

The FAA says that Express One International, which operates Boeing 727s and McDonnell Douglas DC-9s, failed to produce documentation on compulsory maintenance programmes for at least ten aircraft.

The FAA says that it would have grounded the carrier, but adds that the two are working together to resolve the safety concerns.

The carrier has laid off 1,100 of its 1,200 workers and filed for Chapter 11 protection.
