Canadian investigators are gathering information in an effort to identify underlying safety issues in the air taxi industry, owing to a persistently-high fatality rate in the sector.
Transportation Safety Board of Canada says the sector has experienced 229 fatalities in the past 15 years – representing over 60% of all those in commercial aviation.
But while investigations and inquiries have “repeatedly drawn attention” to critical safety issues, says the board, the air taxi industry continues to account for the highest toll.
“[We want] to identify and communicate the underlying systemic safety issues that need to be addressed,” it states.
It is to undertake a safety analysis with a view to drawing up recommendations to address remaining deficiencies and reduce the risk in air taxi operations across Canada.
