London Gatwick airport’s operator is hoping to restore a “limited” number of services over the next few hours, following the drone incursion which led to the airport’s closure.
NOTAM information from Gatwick issued shortly after 04:15 on 21 December states that the airport is “open” but that there is a “risk of increased drone activity” – with the further notification of “mitigation in place”.
At least one aircraft, a Thomas Cook Airlines Boeing 757-300, appears to have repositioned to Gatwick at around 06:00 following diversion to East Midlands airport.
The airport’s operator states that it is working with airlines and air traffic control to “introduce a limited number of flights” over the “coming hours”.
But it is advising passengers to check their flight status before travelling.
Police have appealed for the public to provide information on the identity and location of the drone operator.
“We are employing all available options to deal with the drone,” says the Sussex county force, which previously indicated that the drones involved were of “industrial specification”.
