Maastricht and Groningen airports in the Netherlands are set to undergo a switch to digital remote tower control under a programme overseen by Dutch air navigation service LVNL.

The two airports will be part of an initial deployment of remote towers through a contract which will also establish a remote tower centre at Amsterdam Schiphol.

Saab’s remote tower specialist division SDATS has reached a 20-year agreement with LVNL for the scheme.

“The framework contract has options for additional airports,” says SDATS.

SDATS chief Per Ahl says the agreement will be the first for the company involving a “countrywide implementation”.

“With our second generation of digital towers, the Netherlands will possess new world-class capabilities,” he adds.

Initial operations are scheduled to commence in 2021.
