Former senior Italian civil aviation authority figure Salvatore Sciacchitano has been elected as the president of the ICAO Council, succeeding Nigeria’s Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu.
Sciacchitano will serve in the role for three years from 1 January, says the United Nations organisation.
He previously headed the Italian airworthiness authority RAI and was the deputy general director of the country’s civil aviation regulator ENAC.
Sciacchitano also served as executive secretary of the European Civil Aviation Conference over the course of 2010-18.
Benard Aliu had led the ICAO Council for two terms since 2014.
