Vietnam Airlines is assisting Australian investigators regarding an incident where a Boeing 787-9 conducted a missed approach after failing to deploy its undercarriage.
“On September 19, Vietnam Airlines’ flight VN781, operated by Boeing 787 aircraft, registration VN-A870 from Ho Chi Minh City (Viet Nam) to Melbourne (Australia) encountered a safety event,” says the airline.
“During approach to land, the crew was advised by Melbourne Air Traffic Control that the landing gear was not extended as is standard. The crew initiated a missed approach, then circled the airport and landed safely. Immediately after the flight, Vietnam Airlines representatives in Australia started working closely with the [ATSB]. Safety is the utmost priority of Vietnam Airlines, and the airline is committed to supporting investigations into this matter.”
The aircraft had been conducting its approach to runway 34, and executed a go-around.
Visibility at the time – around 08:04 – was good, and there was no adverse weather, according to meteorological data from the airport.
Investigators have not disclosed the altitude of the 787 or its distance from touchdown at the point when the undercarriage advisory was transmitted. The flight, after carrying out the missed approach, landed around 15min later.
