SAS Commuter has put its Bombardier Dash 8 Q400s back into service after the manufacturer completed an interim modification to smoke detectors in the aircraft's forward cargo hold to prevent false alarms.

It had temporarily grounded the fleet following a series of emergency landings (Flight International, 17-23 October).

The airline has meanwhile determined that the pitot tube failure which led to an emergency landing earlier this month at Copenhagen was caused by a one-off defect.

The Scandinavian carrier says it is lifting its suspension of further deliveries of the aircraft type, with its 10th example due to arrive by the end of the year.

SAS has been grappling with a series of technical glitches which has marred the introduction of the Q400, though Bombardier says that fixes are in hand for all of the problems.
