Australia is to develop a 400kg satellite, the Aries 1, which will be launched into low-Earth orbit in 2000 to provide geological mapping, environmental monitoring and land-use assessment data for agriculture, forestry and defence applications. The project will be the "world's first commercially sustainable resources-information satellite", says Peter McGaurun, Australia's science and technology minister.
