The second prototype of the Indian-designed and developed Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT) was successfully test flown from Hindustan Aeronautics' manufacturing facility in Bangalore on 26 March.

First deliveries of the twin-seat HJT-36 IJTto the Indian air force are expected later this year, with the design intended to enter frontline service during 2005. The service has a potential requirement for up to 200, and is expected to place a launch order for 12 aircraft.

Powered by a Snecma Larzac 04H20 turbofan engine, the IJT can fly at a maximum speed of 405kt (750km/h) and has an operating ceiling of 29,500ft (9,000m).

The aircraft draws on indigenous technologies developed for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft and the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter, says Hindustan Aeronautics.
