Singapore Airlines (SIA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus to establish a flight training joint venture based in Singapore.
The facility will be called Airbus Asia Training Centre (AATC). It will be 55% owned by Airbus with the remaining held by SIA, and will have a joint initial contribution of S$80 million ($63.1 million), says the carrier.
AATC will provide type rating and recurrent training on full-flight simulators for Airbus A320, A330, A340, A350 and A380 aircraft types.
In a statement to the Singapore Stock Exchange, SIA says it believes the demand for pilots is expected to increase significantly, in light of the forecasted economic growth in Asia-Pacific and that of the large number of aircraft orders from the region’s airlines. AATC will also further enhance SIA’s pilot training standards by leveraging on Airbus research and development in aviation training.
The AATC facility in Singapore will be the newest in a network of Airbus training centres around the world, others being at Beijing, Miami and Toulouse, adds the airline.
