Singapore Airlines (SIA) will resume pilot cadet hiring in early August after a three-year pilot hiring freeze.
In an email response to Flightglobal, SIA says the pilot cadet hiring will “cater to future operational requirements, given the lead times involved in training new pilots”.
SIA adds that it expects to train between 80 to 100 cadet pilots for both the mainline carrier and its regional arm, SilkAir.
“We have no immediate plans to hire direct-entry pilots.”
The airline also shares that it managed to reduce excess pilot numbers through several schemes.
They include a voluntary no-pay leave since March 2012 for First Officers and December 2012 for Captains, as well as voluntary crossovers to SilkAir and long-haul low-cost arm Scoot and the termination of pilots on fixed-term contracts in June 2013.
