Smiths Detection and Protection Systems Ð Barringer has received a $2 million order from a major US airline for its Ionscan trace explosive detector technology.

The unnamed airline will deploy the equipment at most of its ticket counters in the US. Deliveries are due for completion during the first quarter of this year.

Smiths says the Ionscans will be positioned at ticket counters where baggage is screened as each passenger checks in.

The company believes there is a shift within the airline community toward smaller, more portable systems which can be deployed quickly and easily. It claims that Ionscan offers a lower acquisition and life cycle cost than other computed tomography detectors.

Ionscan is compact in size and can be installed without significant changes to the layout of the airport itself.
