South Korea’s government has invoked emergency laws to quash an Asiana Airlines pilot strike. It is only the third time in the country’s history that such emergency powers have been used. The government intervention on 10 August came after 25 days of the strike. Around 500 of Asiana’s 839 pilots were involved in the dispute. The key issue was disagreement over a union demand for a say in the management of the airline. During the strike Asiana cancelled about half its domestic services, nearly all its international cargo flights and some international services. It will take two to three weeks before services return to normal.
