Airbus has started flight tests with an A350 featuring a cabin configured with connected Internet of Things equipment.
The airframer says that the precise interior features will be revealed "shortly", but has disclosed that the initial set of connected prototype equipment includes Recaro's iSeat, galley contents in co-operation with catering specialist Gategroup, a remote cabin management control system, and an organic LED display.
The manufacturer says tests will also include the "first step" of Airbus's open-software "IoT backbone" platform.
The trial is being conducted on an A350-900 test aircraft (MSN002), which is fitted with the airframer's Airspace cabin.
Airbus says the tests will enable it to validate and "refine" technical features of a connected cabin.
Assessments with airline representatives are planned around the end of the year.
The manufacturer foresees that connected cabin interiors will allow passenger services to become more personalised, for example through customised onboard catering and IFE content.
Meanwhile, airlines will have opportunities to grow ancillary revenue via personalised retail and advertising, and be able to improve operational efficiency, Airbus says.
