Panasonic Avionics has contributed to the refreshed first-class cabin suites on Emirates' Boeing 777-300ERs with a lightweight modern in-flight entertainment and connectivity system which carries Emirates' signature 'ICE' entertainment platform.
Chief executive of the supplier Hideo Nakano says the carrier had sought a "huge" advance in the ICE interaction across all classes while cutting weight by 12%
Emirates' first-class cabin will include a slim tablet mode controller, effectively providing a 13in (33cm) second touchscreen for ICE as well as the seat and environmental control.
Passengers will be able to use the controller to communicate directly with flight attendants using a video chat capability, or request privacy with a 'do not disturb' setting. The cabin crew will be able to deliver items to passengers through a service hatch in the suite.
A wireless handset control – which Panasonic says is "inspired by a pebble with smooth curves" – offers another way to navigate ICE, or operate such features as the lights and the attendant call.
Panasonic says it includes a "unique" sleep button enabling "convenient" activation, with a single press, of the cabin sleep mode – and full restoration of functionality with a second press.
Emirates is including some additional features in business class, with a new 23in monitor – the largest in this class on the carrier's fleet – while both first and business will have high-power type-C USB charging jacks and thinner seat-power modules.
Panasonic says new "Super Eco" monitor, with a 35% lighter design, will be among the improvements in the 777s' economy-class cabin, along with high-power charging ports, slim electronic boxes and power modules.
