Boeing slashed overall employment by 4.6% over the course of 2017 as jobs declined faster than a projected reduction in overall sales, newly-released company data shows.
The Chicago-based company ended the year with 141,322 employees, or 6,816 fewer than on 1 January 2017.
The number jobs in Boeing Commercial Airplanes fell below 60,000 by the end of the year, with 59,284 on the payroll on 1 January 2018.
Some BCA employees were transferred to the newly-created Boeing Global Services unit, along with employees from Boeing Defense, Space and Security and corporate staffs. BGS formally opened for business on 1 July last year with 20,279 employees. That number rose slightly over the next six months to end the year with 20,345 workers.
BDS finished the year with 35,562 employees and the corporate staff amounted to 26,131 employees.
The distribution of Boeing jobs within the USA changed significantly in some states during 2017, with nearly 5,500 fewer employees in Washington at the end of the year.
