MATRA BAe Dynamics, the European missile giant, has won a £378 million contract to supply the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence (MoD) with its last batch of Seawolf short-range missiles.

The eight-year contract will see 300 jobs created or maintained across nine UK sites.

Seawolf missiles are fitted on Royal Navy Type 22 and 23 frigates to provide short-range defence. Matra BAe Dynamics has held the Seawolf contract since it was first commissioned by the MoD, and will deliver the first set of "several hundred" missiles in the final batch in 2004.

Baroness Symons, the UK defence procurement minister, said: "This is excellent news, both for the Royal Navy and for UK industry. Seawolf provides the Royal Navy with a world-class, battle-proven capability to protect our ships at close range."
