Universal Avionics has been awarded US Federal Aviation Administration supplemental type certification (STC) for a five-instrument suite version of its integrated flat panel display. The certificate was obtained by the Mississauga, Canada-based Mid Canada Mod Center and includes the replacement of standard instruments with four Universal Avionics EFI-640 flat panel displays, as well as an MFD-640 multifunction display, terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS), Universal cockpit display and dual UNS-1F flight management systems (FMS).

The suite is currently configured for various Universal displays, which range from the 140mm (5.5in) diagonal EFI-550 to the 160mm EFI-640, although the company says that a larger 220mm display is under development and is expected to be available from the middle of this year.

The MFD-640 supports images from weather radar systems, TAWS and enhanced ground proximity warning systems, FMS data, traffic systems, uplinked weather graphics and video cameras. The multi-function display will also support Universal Avionics' Vision-1 synthetic vision system that was approved earlier this year. Universal says the flat panel display can accommodate input from a variety of analogue and digital sources.
