Thomson Training &Simulation (TTS) has launched a Windows NT-based full flight simulator with an order from United Parcel Service.

TTS says the simulator, for the Airbus A300-600R, will be the world's first to feature a PC-based real-time computing architecture using the Windows NT operating system. Presently, the company uses Motorola processors and the UNIX operating system.

The new architecture was developed initially for desktop flight management system trainers, and then extended to flight training devices. With the extension to full flight simulators, TTS says it can now offer a complete suite of products based on the same architecture. Advantages claimed include reduced life-cycle costs through common hardware and software, and enhanced operability through networking the devices.

The A300-600R simulator and four flight management system trainers are to enter service at UPS' Louisville, Kentucky, training centre by July 2000. The order includes an option for a Level 5 flight training device.

• British Airways has awarded TTS a contract to supply the airline's first Airbus A320 full flight simulator, for delivery to its Cranebank training centre, near London Heathrow, in September.
