The US Naval Air Systems Command has launched a major effort to demonstrate a long-range vertical take-off and landing capability for a reconnaissance unmanned aircraft.
A three-year, nearly $50 million programme is focused on the Boeing (formerly Frontier Systems) A-160 Hummingbird. Boeing says the navy is buying “several” vehicles that will be delivered in two years, followed by a year-long flight- demonstration programme.
The advanced capability technology demonstration will include A-160s powered by a new, but as-yet unnamed turboshaft engine, according to Boeing.
Meanwhile, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is continuing to transfer its separate and ongoing A-160 development programme to the US Army, with a new contract for fiscal year 2006 expected to be awarded by the end of this month.
