Varig suffers MD-11 gear failureA Varig Boeing MD-11 suffered a failure of its centre main gear unit after landing at Brasilia airport, Brazil on 16 June. The actual separation is believed to have occurred not on gear deployment or touchdown, but later during the landing roll. Local sources indicate that gear separation caused significant damage to the fuselage underside but otherwise the aircraft was undamaged and it was able to continue taxiing. The aircraft (PP-VQG) has been in service for 14 years with the troubled Brazilian flag carrier.
