A new "best of the web" category will go live on Virgin America's Red touch-screen, seat-back in-flight entertainment systems in September.
The Airbus A320 operator says the category will appear "in the main menu section of Red simply to make it easier for our guests to find their favorite web content, including the new BoingBoing TV channel dedicated to the irreverent and eclectic content that has made BoingBoing.net a favorite with pop culture junkies".
The new category on Red's main menu will not be connected to Aircell's Gogo broadband system, which is offered to passengers for a fee. However, Virgin America plans to eventually offer limited mobile communications platforms - for instance social media applications - via Gogo through Red. This integrated offering has been slated for later in 2010.
Red combines Panasonic Avionics' hardware with CoKinetic's software.
