Volvo Aero (Military Programmes) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with General Electric Aircraft Engines covering its F414 engine for EADS' Mako - a supersonic/light combat contender for the European Joint Trainer programme. The MoU involves collaboration discussions on development activities, hardware production and final assembly, up to a total engine value of 30%.
In 2000, Volvo Aero and GE entered into a new major military co-operation agreement. The co-operation involves the F414 engine for the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The Swedish company makes structural and rotating components in the engine´s fan and compressor area
The two companies have long experience of co-operation on the military side. The RM12 engine that powers the Saab JAS39 Gripen fighter is based on GE's F404 powerplant, developed by Volvo Aero.
