Washington National Airport, which serves the nearby US capital, remained closed last week, a lingering reminder of the terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon. US transportation secretary Norman Mineta would not be drawn on when the airport would re-open, saying that the decision rests with the National Security Council and the US Secret Service. He warned on 20 September that an unnamed major US air carrier, believed to be US Airways, will "go under" if the airport was not re-opened in 10 days. Washington National will not re-open until the Bush administration finds a safe way to bring flights in and out of an airport which is too close to potential terrorist targets in the Washington DC area.
