UK and US forces have started to withdraw from the Gulf and the process of learning lessons from the conflict is getting under way.

Military sources say key considerations will include how new weapons and other systems performed, and how tactics can be improved. New weapons used in the war include the MBDA Storm Shadow by the UK Royal Air Force while the US Air Force employed the Textron CBU-105 sensor-fuzed weapon for the first time.

The RAF also used the Raytheon AGM-65 Maverick air-to-surface missile and Enhanced Paveway laser-guided bomb for the first time. Both were procured following the Kosovo conflict in 1999.

Observers say lessons learned will cover all aspects of the war including logistics and support as well as operational flying.
