The European meteorological satellite organisation, Eumetsat, and the USA's National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration have reached formal agreement over the establishment of an Initial Polar System of satellites after the launch of Eumetsat's Metop 1 in 2003. Following that, each organisation will provide spacecraft with a common set of core instrumentation.
