A commercial aircraft is believed to have departed Jakarta’s main airport with a section of its wing missing.

Officials have found the wing section at the airport but have yet to determine which aircraft or airline it belongs to, National Transportation Safety Commission (NTSC) investigator Frans Wenas says from Jakarta.

The section is 3m (9.8ft) long and 30-40in wide, says Wenas.

He says the NTSC plans to launch an investigation but first the airport authority has to find out which aircraft it came from, says Wenas, adding that this matter might be classified as a serious incident.

Wenas declined to comment further.

It is thought that the wing part is most likely to have come from a domestic Indonesian carrier because it was reportedly found near the domestic terminal of Jakarta’s main airport.

This latest discovery comes after last month’s incident in which a Batavia Air Boeing 737-400 aircraft lost a section of its wing soon after takeoff from Jakarta.
