The X-40A 85% scale prototype of the planned X-37 orbital and re-entry environment technology demonstrator for the next generation of reusable launch vehicles has been delivered to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, California by Boeing.

The X-40A will undergo ground and air tests, including a drop test from a helicopter to check guidance and navigation systems, before the full scale X-37 is developed.

The new X-37 spaceplane - originally introduced by Boeing as the Space Manoeuvre Vehicle - is due to be carried aboard the Shuttle during two flights in 2002 and 2003 to test reusable technologies.

These include highly durable, high temperature thermal protection systems, storable non-toxic liquid propellants and new aerodynamic features. The X-37 will also demonstrate 41 airframe, propulsion and operations technologies aimed at reducing launch costs.
