Rockwell Collins (Hall 4, G10) is currently flight-testing its new active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs), developed for the Boeing 747-400 extended range aircraft.
The 8x8in DU-7001 features advanced graphics capabilities and will support future options such as vertical situation display, airport surface maps and electronic checklists. Synthetic vision or video surveillance can also be supported with the addition of a video card. The new AMLCD features an LED backlight that gives better optical performance and reliability than conventional fluorescent tube illumination.
It is designed to be a form, fit and function replacement for the current CRT-based displays installed on earlier 747-400 models. In addition to the hardware upgrade, a simple software installation is also needed. Certification is expected in September 2002 with first aircraft delivery scheduled for October.
