Aeronautics Defense Systems and General Dynamics are co-operating in an effort to get Federal Aviation Administration certification for the Israeli company’s Aerostar unmanned air vehicle system. The US Air Force is also part of the effort, which will integrate an optical sense-and-avoid system with the Aerostar platform. This is designed to allow safe flight of the UAV in airspace also used by manned aircraft. Tests are under way in New Mexico and will continue until early next year. Aeronautics president Avi Leumi says the Aerostar under test is being operated along the Mexican border by US operators trained in Israel.
