Aeronautics Defense Systems expects to conduct the first flight of a new unmanned rotorcraft in the first quarter of next year, with the light helicopter having been designed and built by an undisclosed European company now controlled by the Israeli manufacturer.
Aeronautics declines to provide further details on the aircraft, beyond describing it as similar in size to the Robinson R22 and powered by a Subaru automotive engine recertificated for aviation use. Chief executive Avi Leumi says Aeronautics' European subsidiary will offer a manned version of the light helicopter as a low-price utility aircraft, and says the design has already undergone flight test.
In its unmanned configuration the design will have a maximum take-off weight of 700kg (1,540lb), and will use flight control systems already integrated with Aeronautics' Aerostar and Orbiter unmanned air vehicles. The system will be offered for a variety of military applications, including reconnaissance missions and armed strikes.
