Air India's board has approved an internal recommendation to order 10 Airbus A340-300s and 18 Boeing 737-800s, and is formally seeking government approval to firm up deals with the two manufacturers. Long-range aircraft are badly needed for growth, primarily to expand services to the USA. Narrowbody aircraft are needed to replace Airbus A310s used mainly on regional international routes.
