Boeing has signed a deal with American Airlines, granting the US manufacturer sole supplier status for jet aircraft until 2018. As part of the deal American has placed firm orders for 12 B777s, four B767-300ERs, 12 B757-200s, and 75 B737-600/700/800s. The US carrier has also taken so-called purchase rights on 38 B777s, 26 B767-300ERs, 38 B757-200s and 425 B737-600/700/800s.

Rolls-Royce is to supply RB.211-535B4 engines for 12 B757s ordered by American, which has reserved purchase rights on a further 38 engines.

America West Airlines is to acquire 24 A320s and 10 A319s and/or A321s.

Air France has raised its firm orders for A340s from five to ten and has taken options on five more. The French flag carrier has also replaced its previous order for seven B767-300s and eight B737-500s with a firm order for 10 B777-200s, plus 10 options, with deliveries starting in 1998.

International Aero Engines will supply the V2500 to power 12 A320s ordered by Singapore-based lessor Sale and for seven A320s ordered by China Southern.

Ryanair is to acquire six B737-200s from Lufthansa, with deliveries taking place between December 1996 and October 1997.

Canadian charter operator Air Transat has acquired two L-1011-500 Tristars from TAP Air Portugal.
