Delta Shuttle has re-opened its Marine Air Terminal facilities at New York La Guardia, from which services to Washington DC and Boston operate, following a $7.5 million refurbishment. Rome Fiumicino Airport has inaugurated a new satellite terminal which will be used exclusively for extra European Union flights, and will be able to handle up to 9 million passengers annually. The satellite has been built in 46 months at a cost of about L190 billion ($100 million) and can accommodate up to 11 Boeing 747-sized aircraft simultaneously. It is linked by an automated shuttle train to the international terminal. China Southern Airlines has become the first international airline to be based at the new Beijing Capital Airport, which was formally opened last month. Other international airlines are expected to transfer into the new facility before the end of the year. Swissport International, the ground handling subsidiary of SAir Group, is taking over all the passenger and ramp handling activities of Aer Lingus at London Heathrow. Deutsche AeroConsult (DACO), a wholly owned subsidiary of Flughafen Frankfurt/MainAG (the Frankfurt Airport company), and its partners in the DLIA consortium have been contracted to oversee the start-up of Seoul's new Inchon International Airport which is due to open in April 2001. The contract is valued at DM14 million ($7.2 million). The new international airport is being built on the island of Inchon near the South Korean capital, and will be able to handle 100 million passengers a year. A specialist committee is to investigate safety aspects of criteria governing crosswinds and tailwinds used at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The initiative follows accusations from operators that runway use at Schiphol is dictated by environmental considerations, rather than taking into account the technical needs of aircraft. The commission will evaluate crosswind/tailwind policies at other international airports relative to Schiphol with the aim of formulating recommendations for the Dutch airport.
