Alcatel Espace and WorldSpace of Washington DC have signed a $500 million contract to build three satellites to establish the world's first global digital-audio broadcast-satellite service by 1998. The French company, leading a consortium including Alenia of Italy, will build the CaribStar, AfriStar and AsiaStar satellites, and invest in the WorldSpace service. Motorola will develop the radio receivers.
