More metal, faster, is Alcoa's claim.

Alcoa is taking an optimistic approach to industry opportunities with the announcement of a 30% increase in its aluminium plate and sheet heat-treating capacity, along with expanded milling and ultrasonic inspection capabilities.

Two new extrusion presses will come on line this year at Alcoa's Lafayette, Indiana plant - one rated at 5,000 tonne and the second, 2,500 tonne.

Expansion at the Pimalco plant in Chandler, Arizona includes a 2,500-tonne press and additional manufacturing space. The two new 2,500-tonne 15cm (six inch) presses will complement the four 15cm presses brought on-line since 1995.

Last year Alcoa installed a new horizontal heat treating furnace at Davenport Works, Iowa. The new furnace is capable of very quick-heat and tight control of temperature.

A new aerospace milling machine was recently brought on line to increase capacity as the company continues to upgrade its expanded ultrasonic inspection area to increase capacity.

John Piowaty, vice-president of the company's aerospace division, says the new equipment will reduce manufacturing flow time for customers.
