AlliedSignal (Hall 5/B12) is launching a new panel-mounted radio at Le Bourget that complies with the new European requirements for 8.33kHz channel spacing for flights above 24,500ft.

The KY 196B provides a practical solution to the new mandate for operators with cost or space requirements. It can offer operation with either 8.3kHz or the traditional 25MHz separation between channels so pilots can easily select the mode most appropriate to the altitude being flown. All they have to do is pull out a switch, which increases the number of available channels from 720 to 2,280.

High altitude

The KY 196B is designed primarily for light business jets and turboprop aircraft that fly at high altitude, but often have limited space for avionics. It fits a standard mm "mark width" opening for panel-mounted devices. It can also be used as a plug-in replacement for a Bendix/King KY 196A with no modifications to the wiring or mounting rack.

The mandate for 8.33kHz spacing, adopted to relieve radio congestion in Europe, becomes effective on 7 October in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland and the Netherlands and is expected to be adopted by most other European nations later.

Priced at $5,680, the KY 196B is certified and available today in some of these countries and will be certified in all of them before the effective date of the new regulations.
