Japan's All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Continental Airlines have applied to code-share on each other's flights, less than a week after Japan and the USA concluded an open skies agreement.
The two carriers have applied to the US Department of Transportation to code-share on 19 routes from 28 March 2010, according to a document filed by the airlines' lawyers.
Continental will place its code on eight ANA domestic services: Tokyo-Fukuoka, Tokyo-Hiroshima, Tokyo-Osaka Itami, Tokyo-Komatsu, Tokyo-Nagoya, Tokyo-Okinawa, Tokyo-Sapporo and Tokyo-Sendai.
It will also place its code on 11 ANA international services: Tokyo-Bangkok, Tokyo-Chicago, Tokyo-Ho Chi Minh City, Tokyo-Hong Kong, Tokyo-Honolulu, Tokyo-Los Angeles, Tokyo-New York, Tokyo-San Francisco, Tokyo-Singapore, Tokyo-Taipei and Tokyo-Washington DC.
In turn, Continental requested for authorisation to place ANA's code on its flights.
ANA's code will also be placed on flights operated by other Continental codeshare partners, such as Colgan Air, says the document.
Japan and the USA concluded an open skies pact on 12 December, liberalising air services between the two countries and allowing their carriers to apply for anti-trust immunity together.
